We were not expecting much from Stavanger. We only had a few hours there until we got aboard, you guessed it, another ferry. But we were surprised. We went to the petroleum museum. Its amazing. You can try the kiddie oil rig...
Or try out a real control room from a retired rig. A number of these buttons and switches actually did things, and there was a film running on the screen of what the bit looks like cutting into the ocean floor.
You can see a 3D movie on oil exploration.
You can choose different types of oil and see what they are used for.
But - best for last - you can try out a real evacuation slide used on an oil drilling platform. The platforms sit high above the sea, and if there is a fire, the workers jump into this net chute, and slide down to ocean level.
These guys were ready to sign up for duty on one of the rigs just based on this experience alone.
Thank you Stavanger. What a pleasant surprise!
