Lake Inari

Continuing north, our next destination was Lake Inari.  Along the way, we started seeing reindeer.  Right on the side of the road - sometimes in the road.  This photo, believe it or not, was taken from the car window, using a small digital camera with 3x zoom.  I guess this guy is just so big he didn't even care we were there.

And what do you do at a lake, but untie the canoe and "put in"?!  Which of course we did.

After a little practice with just the boys, we packed up lunch and headed off across the lake.

We wound up on a small island we named Blueberry Island because it was just loaded with wild blueberries.  The beach provided one of those brotherly moments where Lyell explains to Mason about the ways of the world.  Mason is very patient.  For now.

Mason and TT explored the island overland, while Lyell and I explored the shore.  There were good treasures, and of course we picked them up.

Back at the campsite, Lyell was ready to try paddling on his own.  No problem, I gave him a paddle, let out 150' of rope, and off he went.  This is the kind of photo that warms a father's heart.

Which is a good thing, because that night it dropped below freezing!  And as you may recall, it was far too hot when we left to imagine packing anything warm.  What you see us wearing in these photos is the sum total of cold weather clothing we packed for 5 weeks in Scandinavia!
